My morning with books.

I sit here with my cup of coffee, looking at all the books in various stages of listing. I have not begun yet this morning, as I just checked for orders, they will be filled and shipped first.

How do I operate?

I check for orders 3-4 times a day.

First thing in the morning, after lunch, around 4 pm (or before I take my husband to the doctor's office) and before I shut down for the day. Rush orders will be taken to the post office the day, I receive them, the exception is when the order comes in while I have my husband at the doctor's office. These are shipped as soon as possible.

When I acquire a book, it first get a good dusting.

I then examine the book and list as many faults as I see. I will admit, I am human, I can and do make a mistakes.

Each book is a single copy, very seldom do I obtain two copies in the same shape.

First I look at the cover, then I check the pages, The title page is the last place I check for edition and printing. Dust Jackets (DJ) must also be checked. Next is setting a fair price. I do want to make money, but I want you to be happy and come back. Right now I have many books priced at $0.99. I think this is fair, as it does take me time to list each book. These same books on other sites are $2.79.

Now listing...The title comes first, I then enter a description of the book and sometimes a synopsis. Older books take longer to list than newer books. No ISBN means I have to do more research on the value of the book. I list the publisher, edition, and printing on each book. I then do the coding.

Now comes the next step, I clean the books a second time! Yes they get cleaned twice. This time I check for sticker residual from old price tags. If I spot a condition fault I do not remember, I set the book to the side, to check the listing.

Photos come next, when I first began I would do 4- 20 pictures per book, now I do one for each book. If I feel the condition warrants more I take more. The photos are then loaded onto the computer and I crop them. I do not do much more to the photos, as I will have 80 or more photos to deal with at a time, the most 750. This last weekend I have been working with text books. I have not gotten them beyond the examination stage yet.

My books are listed on Amazon and Alibris. The text books are active there, and I have sold a few already. (They got their second cleaning before shipping!)

Once a book is listed I have to shelve and store them until they sell. Once a book sells, it is again check for condition. I will and have cancel an order if the book does not look like my description.

Do I ship over seas? Yes I have shipped to China, New Zealand, Australia, France and Germany. These orders are check to make sure there are no import-export restrictions I will be violating. I do believe in following the law.

Will I add a shipment elsewhere? Yes, If you pay the shipping and import fees.

Do you want more photos? Yes, I will take more and usually add these to the listing. If you do not purchase the book someone else might have the same questions.

Other Item I list go through the same process.

My clothing photos need to be redone, as I do not do well with indoor photography. Looks like Sally and I will be moving out doors for the next photo shoot. Oh who is Sally? She is my antique dressmaking form, who cannot get a size 6 waist! Well, neither can I! We are such great friends.

School's in session!

At least here in Florida, the kids have gone back to school.

Skeleton (Eyewitness Books) by

Steve Parker, Philip Dowell

I would ask everyone to please be aware students are too busy getting back into the swing of school, to pay attention to us behind the wheel. Slow down in school zones, Stop for buses and smile when you pick them up.

Always answer their questions with the truth, and admit you might not know everything. It can be fun looking the answers up together.

These have always been some of my favorite books for children and adults. When I worked in the library, Eyewitness books were the most sought after. I do sell them when I find them.

Can you answer

Why do you say "God Bless You", when someone sneezes?

Pearls are gems of thought ...

... wisdom in the making

When I was a little girl. My great grand mother told me an idea is like a pearl, it grows as you nurture it.

Wearing pearls remind me I have ideas worth nurturing. But they also remind me of my great grandmother.

Inventions, stories and songs all begin with an idea. If you ignore the idea you do not give it value. Take your idea nurture it. Write it down help it grown and you will have a pearl you value.

Country Western singers find value in their life experiences, by expressing them in their music.

Writers place value in their ideas by sharing them with us in newspapers, movies, television shows and books.

Scientist have made a huge impact on our life. They have given their pearls of wisdom value, changing our live tremendously in the last 100 years.

Where would we be today if no one placed value behind the computer, phone, television, and electric range?

Please nurture your pearls, the ideas will always enrich your lives.

A week of fun

You will notice, I have not been active since the 15th. The 16th was my birthday! I got the best birthday present ever!

My husband and daughter managed to surprise me! On the evening of my birthday, after I got home from work, my husband told me a package had arrived and he placed it our daughter's bedroom. Now, I was wondering why he placed it in there, but I of course went back to check it out. When I opened the door there stood Deborah! She had arrived from LA 5 minutes before I pulled into the garage.

Now we had a wonderful 3 days, Deborah's flight left on Thursday.

She did talk me into obtaining a new laptop, and a camera. I have thus changed from an Apple G-4 lap-top to an Acer with window 7. The G-4 has been a wonderful computer, but is going obsolete. The Apple survived a fall from the aircraft overhead hitting the floor, yes things do shift especially when you forget to zip the pocket closed. The G-4 works fine, just slowly, and has decided to eat the Harry Potter disk I was listening to.

I will say there is a learning curve. The keys are placed differently. And I have almost figured out how to print everything I need.

The screen is smaller than I am used, am I a convert to windows? I will let you know.

Computer frustrations

Perhaps I am to old to teach new tricks but this laptop has difficulty problems printing postage and packing slips.

Perhaps, if I had passed Typing in High School I would be doing better today.

The book of the day: The Twilight Saga - 3

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer

FANS OF THE TWILIGHT SAGA WILL BE ENTHRALLED BY THIS RIVETING STORY OF BREE TANNER, A CHARACTER FIRST INTRODUCED IN ECLIPSE, AND THE DARKER SIDE OF THE NEWBORN VAMPIRE WORLD SHE INHABITS.

ALL BREE KNOWS IS THAT LIVING WITH HER fellow newborns has few certainties and even fewer rules: watch your back, don't draw attention to yourself, and above all, make it home by sunrise or die. What she doesn't know: her time as an immortal is quickly running out.

THEN BREE FINDS AN UNEXPECTED FRIEND in Diego, a newborn just as curious as Bree about their mysterious creator, whom they know only as her. As they come to realize that the newborns are pawns in a game larger than anything they could have imagined, Bree and Diego must choose sides and decide whom to trust. But when everything you know about vampires is based on a lie, how do you find the truth?

IN ANOTHER IRRESISTIBLE COMBINATION of danger, mystery, and romance, Stephenie Meyer tells the devastating story of the newborn army as they prepare to close in on Bella Swan and the Cullens, following their encounter to its unforgettable conclusion.

Visit the American West in The Southern Devil

The Southern Devil by Diane Whiteside

Even a perfect gentleman has a little devil in him.

Once an orphaned, starving, Confederate war veteran, Morgan Evans is now a wealthy man respected for both his business acumen and his chivalrous Southern manners. He would be the perfect catch for any woman, but only one holds his constant attention. Jessamyn Tyler Evans has been his obsession since the time she derailed one of his spy missions by holding him hostage in her bed for days. Her innocent explorations awakened a fierce hunger inside the young Morgan, and the passion and intimacy they shared frightened them both. Jessamyn spurned Morgan for his cousin, and Morgan vowed that someday he would drive her as wild with desire as she had driven him. Now Jessamyn has returned. The payback has begun...

Jessamyn has an obsession of her own: hunting for a legendary family treasure in the hills of Colorado. To do so, the spirited widow needs a husband, and Morgan Evans is only too happy to join her masquerade...for a price: she must submit to being his, body and soul, surrendering herself to whatever he demands. It's a devil's bargain to be sure.

Their union is as treacherous as it is passionate--and the only thing they can trust. Searching for a treasure that may not exist--a treasure others would kill for--two lovers are moving deeper into unmarked territory, where no threat is more perilous than everything they feel...

A Romance Review

Morgan Evans survived the horror of the Civil War to find his family dead and the woman he has always wanted beyond his reach. Years later Morgan is a wealthy Southern gentleman well known and respected for his business insight. He would make some lucky woman a fine catch but there is only one woman for Morgan, Jessamyn Tyler Evans, his childhood friend and his cousin’s widow. She has been the object of his every carnal thought since the night she thwarted one of his spy missions by holding him hostage in her attic bedroom. He vowed to return the favor someday and bind her to his bed where he would practice every erotic art he knew. Now the opportunity has arrived for Morgan to fulfill his vow.
Jessamyn needs a man - now. She is determined to save her family estate from the threat that yellow fever poses to the region. To do so, she has to claim the treasure she inherited that lays somewhere deep in the Colorado mountains. However, only a male member of the family can claim the map to the legendary fortune and Morgan seems only too willing to help. The price for his aid may be more than Jessamyn can pay but the temptation to surrender her body and even her soul to Morgan is too much to resist. Their passionate partnership will save their souls and possibly their lives because Morgan and Jessamyn aren’t the only ones searching for the treasure.

The Southern Devil, the latest in Diane Whiteside’s connected series, is so hot, so deeply sensual, so richly drawn you will have visions of sultry southern nights. Lovingly detailed with characters you will love and despise plus an adventure that will have you on the edge of your seat The Southern Devil is a sinfully delicious thrill.

Enjoy!

Serial Killers

True Crime books about serial killers, which would you read?

Fatal

In an era that produced some of the most vicious female sociopaths in American history, Jane Toppan would become the most notorious of them all.

AN ANGEL OF MERCY
In 1891, Jane Toppan, a proper New England matron, embarked on a profession as a private-duty nurse. Selfless and good-natured, she beguiled Boston's most prominent families. They had no idea what they were welcoming into their homes....

A DEVIL IN DISGUISE
No one knew of Jane's past: of her mother's tragic death, of her brutal upbringing in an adoptive home, of her father's insanity, or of her own suicide attempts. No one could have guessed that during her tenure at a Massachusetts hospital the amiable "Jolly Jane" was morbidly obsessed with autopsies, or that she conducted her own after-hours experiments on patients, deriving sexual satisfaction in their
slow, agonizing deaths from poison. Self-schooled in the art of murder, Jane Toppan was just beginning her career -- and she would indulge in her true calling victim by victim to become the most prolific domestic fiend of the nineteenth century.

Infamous Murders

Men kill each other for many reasons, but the two most common motives are greed and passion. Policemen and criminologists know that murders involving money and desire tend to be the most violent, for both impulses can drive the slayer to insane lengths. This book investigates nineteen of the most brutal murders ever committed by man. Readers will be shocked but fascinated by the black and sadistic trail of the Manson 'family'; Lizzie Borden, whose story has passed into folk history; Peter Kurten, the 'Vampire of Dusseldorf' and Leopold and Loeb, wealthy and well-born, who killed for amusement.

Each story in this disturbing but compelling book is fully illustrated with black and white photographs and diagrams.

The Verdict

I'm not sure I could read either one, without reading the other. Could you?

My copies sold before I could read them you will have to let me know what you decide!

Dessert for the senses

Meadow-Scalloped Plate

Have you ever hosted a dessert party?

You would think you need tons of desserts, but with everyone dieting allow 2-3 small pieces per person.

A sinfully wicked desert, just tempting you to savor it my Truffles

I melt 8 ounces of a good quality semisweet chocolate in 8 ounces of heavy cream atop a double boiler. Stirring until smooth, I then allow this to cool in the refrigerator. Using a pair of teaspoons I form balls of chocolate and roll them into cocoa powder or ground almonds.

I have also been known to add a tablespoon or two of Chambord, Kahlua, or Godiva Liqueur before placing in the refrigerator, then forming this adult only the balls.

As sinfully rich as this dessert is, with all the wonderful chocolate and cream, I serve one possibly two pieces on a bread and butter plate with a faint dusting of cocoa. Heavenly or Devilish you decide.

Windows of Silk

When you have a home with these fabulous tall windows tall 10'-14' ceilings. Your standard 84" drapery panel is just to short for the windows. I discovered 120" draperies give you that elegant look you are looking for.

Silk draperies give you an luxurious feeling in any situation. Lining is necessary to protect the silk as well as give the draperies body.

To get the look of the window on the left use Blue Silk Pinch Pleat Drapery panel on a rod. Topped with gold curtain ties backs in a non-traditional manner by hanging them at the top of the draperies. This is a stationary application with Silhouette Blinds for privacy. Note here the pinch pleats have been carefully opened to allow the use of a two inch rod. A rod designed to hole pinch pleats would be an easier application.

The second room show the 120" drapery hanging in a room with 10' 9" ceiling. Note the draperies do kiss the floor. The ceiling color has been brought down 6" onto the upper wall, with the draperies just below. Again a stationary application with Silhouette Blinds for privacy.

You can find more decorating ideas in Better Homes and Gardens New Decorating Book.

Prehistoric life

Chronicles of Ancient Darkness by Michelle Paver

Highly recommended for
Gr 5-9 a series delving in Mysticism, Magic, spirits and demons - tipped to be the biggest sensation in children's publishing since Harry Potter.

About the Author.
Michelle Paver was born in central Africa but went to England as a child. After earning a degree in biochemistry from Oxford University, she became a partner in a London law firm but eventually gave that up to write full-time.
The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series came from Michelle's lifelong passion for animals, anthropology, and the distant past—as well as an encounter with a large bear in a remote valley in Southern California. To research the books, Michelle has traveled to Finland, Greenland, Sweden, Norway, Arctic Canada, and the Carpathian Mountains. She has slept on reindeer skins, swum with wild killer whales, and gotten nose-to-nose with polar bears—and, of course, wolves.

  1. Wolf Brother (First Edition) 6,000 years in the past, twelve-year-old Tarak and his guide, a wolf cub, set out on a dangerous journey to fulfill an oath the boy made to his dying father--to travel to the Mountain of the World Spirit seeking a way to destroy a demon-possessed bear that threatens all the clans.
  2. Spirit Walker (First Edition) When a deadly illness begins to afflict the clans, twelve-year-old Torak, with help from Renn and Wolf, embarks on a journey to find a cure, in the follow-up adventure to Wolf Brother. Reader's Guide available.
  3. Soul Eater (First Edition) When Wolf is taken by the Soul-Eaters, Torak must infiltrate their clan to bring him back.
  4. Outcast Cast out of the clans because his mark as a Soul-Eater has been revealed, Torak finds refuge on a distant island, but when he discovers that Seshru the Viper Mage has discovered his whereabouts, Torak has no choice but to stand and fight.
  5. Oath Breaker (First Edition) When he was outcast, Torak was the hunted one. Nine moons later he becomes the hunter when he vows to avenge the killing of one of his closest friends. Racked by guilt and grief, he follows the killer into the Deep Forest, where the World Spirit stalks the hidden valleys as a tall man with the antlers of a stag. But there is a rottenness at the heart of the Forest, for its clans have succumbed to the lies of the Soul-Eaters. Here, Torak must face fire, war, and overwhelming evil. Oath Breaker is a story about keeping promises and the true cost of vengeance.
There has been some talk of a movie but I could find not information on any casting or release dates. Until then I recommend the following link for all those who want to be clanners!

www.torak.info Yes, the ALL-NEW CLAN is here! Welcome to your new home of the net, the place to meet fellow Clanners from all over the world - all of them passionate about Chronicles of Ancient Darkness.
